☠ the captain ☠

MAGIC || Metal & Bone
AGE || 43 (summer)
SUBSPECIES || Standard
PRONOUNS || He / Him

 Dual Toned Ringed Crest / Curved Drake Horns / Multispade Tail / Elven Ears / Fluffy Chest & Legs
(tail is rare, referral from Viridiannite )

Baran Ironclad, also known to the general public as his alias ‘Bullseye’, is a feared and infamous pirate captain who sails the Celestial Seas with his motley crew of miscreants.

Aggressive, intelligent and passionate, Baran is a fearless Captain who can sometimes be a little too prideful and stubborn for his own good. Despite his tendency to be a little hard-headed, he is determined and can be highly adaptive to new developments when the need arises. His adaptivity has also lead him to be quite artistic, with many fine skills he has no shame in showing; he is proud of the carvings and designs he himself has etched onto his own clothing, weapons and even his ship. The only side of Baran hidden from the public eye is his highly romantic and sentimental side, that his husband alone gets to see.

As an egg, Baran was stolen from a Browbird nursery by a band of goblin thieves, only to be rescued and raised by pirates. Having spent his entire life among pirates and their ships, he quickly worked his way up the ranks. When he had barely turned 20, the ship he was aboard was beset by an enormous celestial dragon that savaged the crew and swallowed the captain whole. It was in the midst of the chaos that the young Browbird found himself able to crush the skull of the beast, killing it and ending its rampage. The surviving crew immediately nominated him Captain, and the act became the first feat to launch him into infamy.

☠ casting styles ☠

Bladecraft
implement || Demontongue, Enchanted Sabre
function || Energy is channeled through the four enchanted rubies in order to greatly amplify his magic. Baran uses his sword as a strong & precise casting staff, and favored weapon in combat.

Guncraft
implement || Omen, Enchanted Flintlock
function || When fired, the magically charged rubies set into the mechanism strike one another, charging the bullet with explosive energy. Bullets charged this way act as conduits for Baran’s magic.

Incantation
implement || Spoken word
function || Takes effect when the words of a spell are uttered correctly. Similar to common pure willpower casting, but provides focus and much more specific results

Common Sorcery
implement || Gesture, willpower
function || The basic practice of using one's magic without tools. Weaker and less precise than other forms of casting

☠ spell list ☠

Metal
-Soul Forge || Using only his hands, Baran is able to carve, weld and shape metal to his will. Much of his crew’s weaponry are reforged from scrap salvage by the captain himself

-All That Glitters || If it is composed significantly of metal, be it jewellery, weapons or otherwise, Baran is able to draw it towards his hand as if by magnetic force

-Twisted Metal || Directing Demontongue towards enemy weapons (swords, guns, canons, armor, etc) Baran crushes, bends and buckles them until they are useless

-Demon’s Hold || When engaged directly with blades, a simple parry will allow Demontongue to weld to the enemy’s weapon, allowing Baran to wrench it from their hands

-Hand of Fate || Reacting quickly, Baran can arc the trajectory of magically charged bullets fired from Omen, closing in on evasive & tricky targets

-Heart of Iron || Once an enemy has been shot, if the bullet remains lodged inside them, Baran may control it from within their body to ensure it does it’s job

Bone
-Be Ye Living || Baran is able to control the skeletons of living adversaries. Enemies can be pulled towards him, shoved away, or simply held forcefully in place

-Be Ye Dead || Similarly, any bone matter from deceased creatures can also be manipulated, albeit with significantly less resistance and little effort on Baran’s part

-Bones To Dust || With enough focus, Baran is able to break and crush the bones of his enemies inside their own bodies. This is a last resort spell, and is generally saved for beasts over intelligent foes

-On Your Feet || Placing his hand on an injured ally, Baran is able to repair almost any kind of broken or dislocated bone, even quite heavily shattered bones

-Coward’s Bane || Remaining still and quiet, Baran is able to sense if anything possessing a skeleton is nearby. This has minimal accuracy and takes quite a bit of focus, moreso the further away the creature is

-Osseous Artistry || Baran’s affinity for bone makes him naturally talented with preserving, carving and crafting trinkets with it. It was this power that allowed him to encase the skeleton of the enormous celestial dragon within the figurehead of his ship

Synergy
-Ivory & Steel || When crafting jewellery, tools & weapons, Baran is able to make use of both metal and bone to a highly artistic degree. Weapons forged using both channel his natural magic through them with greater ease

☠ important belongings ☠
☆ Demontongue || A straight Sabre, which can be used as a casting staff as well as in regular swordfighting. The hilt is fitted with four enchanted rubies and core of celestial dragon fang. The blade is said to have been forged from the bullets peppering the corpse of the dragon.
☆ Omen || A magic Flintlock, with a ruby set into the striking mechanism, allowing it to fire with magical energy rather than explosive gunpowder. It is loaded using simple iron pellets which, when ignited with the ruby, enable Baran to cast metal-based spells with them more easily.
☆ The Harbinger || A large three mast, two engine, sixteen cannon starsea ship, and Baran’s most prized possession. It is infamous, and easily sighted by its huge draconic figurehead & bullseye jolly roger.
☆ Harbinger’s Crew || Fourty five rotten outlaw scoundrels who serve aboard The Harbinger. A motley crew of creatures from across the universe, united under their Captain to serve their starship.
☆ Promise Ring || The simple golden band that displays his commitment to his husband, Taro. The matching pair of bands were crafted personally by Baran.

☠ The Harbinger ☠
[] [] []
Once a merchant ship, the pirate vessel has been under Ironclad’s command for the past 20 years. It is a fairly large sea-level Starboat (most resembling the real world full-rigged pinnace) that is extremely fast for its size, and manned by a patchwork crew of outlaws. The ship has been elaborately modified many times over the decades, by the Captain’s trusted Carpenter & Engineers, as well as by himself, with both practical and purely aesthetic additions. The figurehead famously contains the skeleton of a vicious celestial dragon, which was slain by the Captain when he was young.

The Harbinger has been known to fly two iconic flags; a black flag which gives their quarry the choice to surrender, and a red flag under which they give no quarter. Unlike some less infamous ships, The Harbinger never flies false colors, as they are already exceptionally easy to identify as pirates.

Rowdy Boys (baran's crew) by b4dly-dr4wn

First Mate || “Meathook” Gukat Ko Talak. Humorless, Callous, Blunt
8'3 / kuo (neutral magic affinity)
An enormous monitor lizard-esque alien, of a war race known as the Kuo. Meathook towers over every single member of the Harbinger’s crew at a gargantuan 8 foot 4 inches, & acts as the Captain’s right hand man and bodyguard. He obeys the captain alone, making him the absolute highest ranking crew member; Kuo are known to answer only to those they know can kill them, and make little in the way of conversationalists.

crew history: Kuo are not known to surrender easily, so naturally when set upon by pirates, they will fight to the last man. When Talak’s ship was attacked by the Harbinger, every last one of them save for him went down fighting. Seeing the battling prowess of the Captain and his crew, Talak lay his weapons down and swore allegiance to them instead.

made of completely non-magical matter
+resistance to mind & mind-based magic
-ability to perceive magical energy & aura
weapons: spiked shield, 4000 psi of bite pressure, 3 inch claws, 300 pound tail

Quartermaster || Hatchet Brewsly. Intense, Authoritarian, Irritable
6’0 / horned wolf (fire affinity)
Though not as physically imposing as the First Mate, Hatchet is a vicious old wolf-headed humanoid, and an extremely strict supervisor. He has known Baran since they were children; where Meathook serves as the Captain’s muscle, Hatchet provides the brains, and is the only member of the crew who may question Baran’s orders. As well as being a back up tactician, he also supervises all lower positions on the ship, unafraid to dole out harsh punishment to layabouts, screwups and mutineers.

crew history: Hatchet was born a pirate, raised on the sea and in hidden coves. When he was around 9 years old he wound up on the same ship as young Baran, and the two (along with their worry-wart friend Ezekiel) have been close friends since.

+physical resistance to heat & burning
+skill with use of fire-related weaponry / tools
-sensitivity to water & water-based magic
weapons: flaming bullwhip with firestone core, engraved ivory handle six-shooter

Navigator || Ace Deadeye. Careful, Witty, Focused
6'6 / automaton (metal/crystal affinity)
A large complex automaton, constructed by the ship’s two engineers for the sole purpose of providing a reliable navigator. The construct shows an impressive AI, with reasoning & learning skills as well as a noticeable personality. He answers to both the Captain and the Quartermaster, and views the engineers as a pair of odd parental figures.

crew history: Deadeye was built at the request of Ezekiel, who refused to trust anyone who came to be hired for the job with the navigation of their ship. Jed & Zed had to revise him several times to remove some excessive weaponry and attitude, eventually resulting in the snarky model Ezekiel now loves to hate.

+overall physical strength and weight
+skill with use & repair of mechanical weaponry / tools
+conductivity & resistance to magical energy
+passive energy gain & power buff to spellcasters within 20 feet
-susceptible to physical manipulation by metal magic
weapons: wrist-mounted gattling gun, chest mounted cannon, frequently changing hidden weaponry

Bosun || Ezekiel Shacklewood. Surly, Suspicious, Cynical
6’5 / fishman (water/arcane affinity)
Despite his best efforts to live in the background, the always-scowling three-eyed tentacle-haired Boatswain of the Harbinger finds himself constantly dragged into the action. Growing up with Baran & Hatchet both, Ezekiel has always been the reasonable (if not constantly complaining) third of their small brotherhood. Putting his surviving two eyes to good use, Ezekiel watches over all aspects of the ship, and makes sure everything is in perfect working order.

crew history: Like Hatchet, Ezekiel came to meet Baran as a child. Always the one to fret about the details of a stupid idea first, Ezekiel proved himself as an excellent observationalist, making him Baran’s first choice for Bosun on his new crew.

+skill with moving through water
+accelerated healing
+some resistance to cold & freezing
+waterbreathing
-sensitivity to harsh sunlight & dry air
weapons: dual blades (shuangdao), four-barrel flintlock pepperbox

Engineers || Jed & Zed. Curious, Esoteric, Devious
4'3 / gnomes (crystal & metal affinities)
The pair of devious gnomes are a nefarious and inseparable pair of mad inventors, well known for their eccentric habits and rowdy personalities. While not busy maintaining the engines and boiler room, the pair can be found tinkering away at experimental weapon upgrades, powered mechanical armor, and all manner of strange & dangerous gadgets.

crew history: Notorious for their habit of building Giant Death Robots and breaking into vaults & rich estates for plunder, Baran was more than welcoming when the two (seeking further treasures, no doubt) offered their services to his crew.

(jed)
+skill with use & repair of crystal charging & wiring
+physical resistance to magical energy
-sensitivity to void & void-based magic
weapons: deringer pocket pistol, frequntly changing hidden weaponry
(zed)
+skill with use & repair of mechanical weaponry / tools
+physical resistance to cutting wounds
-sensitivity to fire & fire-based magic
weapons: deringer pocket pistol, frequntly changing hidden weaponry

Carpenter || Lurhal Daggerboard. Cold, Deadpan, Brooding
6'7 / bugbear (wood affinity)
An ancient old Bugbear man, Lur has been a carpenter for pirate ships since before any of the current crew were born. When Baran’s egg was first discovered, apparently stolen by a band of hungry goblins, it was Lur who took it in, hatched it, and raised the tiny screeching hellion that resulted. Though a harsh and crotchety old bastard, Lur loved the little creature like a son, and remains the man Baran respects the most.

crew history: Lur has always been the carpenter for the Harbinger, even before the ship came to be captained by his boy, and intends to serve it as long as he is able

+physical resistance to blunt damage
+skill with repair, maintenance & handling anything composed of wood
-sensitivity to fire & fire-based magic
weapons: double-barrel sawn off pump-action shotgun, gloved fists

Surgeon || Eli Mercury VIII. Eccentric, Formal, Meticulous
6'2 / pure human (blood affinity)
Surprisingly well-spoken and poised for a mad pirate surgeon, Eliphas the Eighth is the one and only (mostly) pure human in the crew. Though his cyborg eye was crafted by Jed & Zed, he lost his real eye long before joining the crew, in the furious & petty feud that would eventually turn him to piracy. He is a skilled and precise surgeon, but can sometimes come off a little unhinged, with his extensive collection of preserved organs and often bloodstained apron

crew history: Once a rich and very promising upper-society man, Eli attended a prestigious medical school that his seven surgeon relatives before him had graduated. It was there, however, that he met his most bitter rival; an awful, smug, slightly-more-talented-than-him young man who awoke within Eli a very nasty temper problem. After a long and increasingly violent game of one-upmanship, they wound up in armed fight that lost Eli his eye. During a mass escape, Eli fled prison & found himself tavern hopping and providing his services for criminals, a habit that would eventually lead him to Baran.

+resistance to disease both magical and physical
+skill with surgery, wound care & disease management
-susceptible to both burning and freezing
weapons: dual sword-hilt daggers, ornate gold and silver revolver

Lookout || “Screech” Huaazho Ngquaague. Loud, Laidback, Jokester
5'3 / hao zhar (neutral affinity)
Screech hails from a race of natural comedians, a raptor-like bird race from the planet Kaa’Ngwazhar known as the Hao Zhar. He enjoys his time aboard the Harbinger lazing about in the ship’s crowsnest, squawking terrible jokes and puns though the intercom down at the rest of the crew on deck. Though ‘forcefully’ recruited, Screech took to his job and the life that came with it extremely easily.

crew history: His race is usually quite neutral and well-behaved, but his lust for treasure & freedom drove him to the life of piracy. After a few solo plundering attempts, Screech was eventually caught raiding the secret stash of the Harbinger’s crew. For skilfully finding his way there, he was offered a position on their ship, with the alternative being imprisonment.

made of completely non-magical matter
+resistance to mind & mind-based magic
-ability to perceive magical energy & aura
weapons: ornate automatic repeater crossbow, obsidian stiletto dagger

Cook || Haddock Squidlegs. Weak, Uneasy, Skittish
5'7 / half-dragon (fire/arcane affinity)
A jittery, scrawny, untalented little half-dragon. Squidlegs was so named by the crew for his constantly knocking knees any time danger is afoot. His cooking is atrocious, consisting of gruel and fish scraps haphazardly thrown together from whatever is stolen or fished up by the crew. He can barely produce enough fire to light his own stove, and though he is able to shift into a more draconic form, it is as small and gangly as he is as a humanoid.

crew history: Previously a captive on a privateer’s vessel, he is not a trained chef by any means, and simply wound up with the job when he frantically offered his services in exchange for no longer being held hostage.
